The Congress Development Company in Hillside, Illinois, owns and operates the former 55-acre Congress Landfill that accepted waste from Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area homes and businesses from 1980 through 2008. The site is closed for the acceptance of waste. The only material accepted is topsoil for use in grading the surface. That topsoil meets strict acceptance criteria, and it is not special waste or hazardous waste.

Over the past several years considerable resources have been invested to insure that the closed Hillside Landfill complies with all local, state and federal regulations. In order to stay compliant, Congress Development Company is currently completing a new leachate storage tank facility and adding new equipment to the wastewater treatment facility. The combination of the tank facility and new treatment equipment will help improve the entire wastewater treatment process as well as improving the leachate collection system. In addition, Congress Development Company is also making improvements to the landfill gas collection system. We are installing a new Thermal Oxidizer at the site. The Thermal Oxidizer will help to improve landfill gas quality.

Although the landfill is closed, there will continue to be activity at the site. You may notice trucks still entering and leaving the site. This is because contractors and Congress Development Company staff will continue to monitor the closed landfill along will run all of the systems and facilities that collect landfill gas and leachate.

We will continue to find ways to improve the functionality of the now-closed landfill.

Recently, the Congress Development Company completed a $2.1 million dollar landscaping project at the intersection of Mannheim Road and Interstate 290 in the Village of Hillside near the former landfill. Here is a photo of the landscaping along with a photo of the Congress Development Company team. Pictured left-to-right is Jim Love, Josh McGarry, Jim Teter, Steve Smith, and John McEvoy:
